Does a lawn genie make less dust than a vac trailer? I have lung problems and also many oak trees in my yard. Trying to come up with a way to get up leaves so we can keep our home. Any help would be welcome. Thanks Ed.

The Genie appears to be a flail mower, with pickup system. If the leaves are dry, and shred well in the flail mower then you are going to produce dust. Probably a bit less than a vaccum system, but still a bunch I'd bet.

You could get a mulching kit for your current lawn mower that might help reduce how much you need to pick up, but if you have lots of oaks, you really need to get the leaves off the lawn or you are going to need to be applying lots of lime to counter the acid of oak leaves.

I would suggest you wear a dust mask. If that's not providing sufficient sealing/filtration, step up to a respirator like you would use for painting, and put dust/particulate filters on the respirator.

The other option would be to get a lawn sweeper like this: Agri-Fab SmartSweep Lawn Sweeper — 44in.W, Model# 45-0456 | Lawn Sweepers Vacuums| Northern Tool + Equipment

Much lower dust with this option, but nearly zero shredding either.

If you pulled the lawn sweeper behind your rider while mowing wouldn't the mower shred the leaves and dump the grass clippings and the shredded leaves onto the basket all at the same time.

Most ride on mowers have a right-hand discharge, and the sweeper would be directly behind the mower, so it wouldn't pickup what had just been cut/shredded.

Thanks guys I don't think the sweeper would work because of the volume of leaves we have. I almost think it would be a semi load if I did not shred some way. I also would like to stay away from a respirator because of heat and a dust mask does not seal on a full beard. I might end up with a respirator but am hoping for something better. WE have been looking at buying a different house but we like it here. Again thanks.

I was envisioning this kind of unit for a respirator for you.

Amazon.com: MSA Safety Works 817664 Toxic Dust Respirator: Home Improvement

Only covers nose/mouth, and does not restrict breathing that much. I wear them quite a bit when painting or working around dusts. MUCH better seal that any of the white dust masks. Plus the lawn clean up is usually in the fall when the outside temps are cool.

I also have full beard, and find I can get a sufficient seal with the above respirator to protect me from the environment. If you look more like grizzly Adams, well it might not work well, but if you can do a close trim for a month or so of fall clean up then it might work for you.

Would I use this kind of mask with a beard it in a truly hazardous atmosphere?... no.. but my days of being a firefighter/haz-mat tech are over, so I can run away from those kinds of hazards now =).

Hello Ed of all trades,

You can keep your home Ed.
Save your money and keep your Mathews Company Lawn Genie.
Do you use ear muffs or ear plugs when you mow?

Being a Mathews Lawn Genie Pick up Mower owner I can and will
help you with this issue.

Which of the three models with the collection basket
do you have 36", 48", 60" ?

About the leaves, you want to pick the leaves
up whole rather than shredding them first.

It will take more trips of course-been there and do that
every season but you will have no issues with leaf and
leaf mold dust this way.

What you need is a good dust mask with an exhalation
valve built into the disposable mask.

A dust mask with the exhalation valve will perform better
than the standard 3M dust mask type N95 dust and mist masks.

The condensation from your breathing will not plug the mask and
affect your ability to breathe efficiently as the exhalation valve is
opening as you exhale each time and only clean fitered air is coming
through the mask.

You can purchase these 3M brand dust masks from Gemplers
very quickly by mail order purchasing them with a credit card.
It takes about three days or so to get them from the Gemplers
Warehouse in Wisconsin via U.P.S.

Here two dust mask models for you.

3M8210V N95 respirator with exhale valve
Price is 14.95 per box of 10 masks plus the UPS shipping charge

OR

3M 8511 N95 particulate respirator with exhale valve
$24.80 10 masks to a box

The model 8511 has more NIOSH testing certifications for filtration
efficiency and protection for the user.

The N95 Rating for both disposable masks indicates to the user it is 95% efficient at
preventing the inhalation of dusts. I personally use the 3M N95 dust masks wthout the
exhalation valves and they work very well for both mowing and snow removal with my gas tractors.

They sell a lot of these exhalation valve type masks to folks with asthsma
to allow them to work out of doors and the exhale valve in the disposable mask will permit you to breath normally at all times.

Please find below the Gemplers sales order line phone number,
individuals may use a credit or debit card to place an order with them.

I just viewed your response and if you intent on keeping the full beard the only way to have clean air all the time is with a full hood dust and mist mask with a battery powered ventilation system which may be purchased from LAB Safety Supply which is now part of Gemplers.
