The military was/is probably the biggest generator of acronyms.



I was told by a phone company exec that they beat the military w regards to acronyms. Dunno how true it rreally is, but if youve ever been involved in that business, you'd believe him.

Ship High In Transit... S.H.I.T.

Manure used to be shipped on sailing vessels. If it got damp in the hold, it could grow mold and eventually build up enough heat to start a fire. So it was labelled S.H.I.T.



That is what is unofficially called a Bacronym. You take an existing English word and turn it into an acronym.

Did you ever get the e-mail saying the word golf came from Gentlemn Only, Ladies Forbidden? As in the other word above, that is wrong for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that acronyms were not even invented until hundreds of years after the game of golf. Yet people still fall for it.
