Slope...what is safe?? Anyone here ever roll over?

The best advice I can give is: If a slope LOOKS too steep, it IS too steep. Do not go on a slope you do not feel comfortable with. It there is any doubt about your safety then there is no boubt.

You can drive up and down steeper slopes than you can drive across (side slope). Work up and down slopes whenever possible. Also keep the fel and implements as low as possible when side sloping.

Don't know how many times I've rolled over. It must be at least 4 or 5 times a night after I've gone to bed. One time I think I even rolled right out of bed.

I would like to add that sometimes it is the "low-risk" situation that
bites you ! I was mowing in my field the other day and using the inside
brake on my 4100 HST to turn and as I was turing the rear tire hit the
edge of a VERY small low spot where the water drains out of my field.
That stopped the turn and caused the tractor to tip up /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
It scared the bejeezuz out of me, but the tractor settled back on it's
own and my first thought after "phewwww" was I have GOT to post
what happened on TractorByNet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
So be careful when using diffential braking to turn, as the tightening
of that very turn can cause a problem if a tire hits anything

Regarding the tractor that rolled on a city street, was the float still attached to the tractor when it made the turn?

If so, then possibly the inertia from float is what rolled the tractor. The float would have been pushing the tractor straight ahead, while the tractor was turning. The angular momentum of the tractor coupled with the "straight ahead" momentom of the float could then push the tractor onto its side (toward the "outside" portion of the turn).

To prevent this, the tractor must come to a complete stop. Then begin the turn (without going straight ahead and then turning).

I'm not trying to smooth over this tragety. Just explaining the physics that occurs. I've studied this in school and I've lived through the calamity. ...just don't want it to happen to anyone.

But of course, if I had been taught about it, I probably wouldn't appreciate it so much. I suppose that's human nature.

I have an old case 580 with no seatbelt or rops and have rolled it twice. The first time I picked up a large boulder in the bucket was coming down the driveway with the bucket 6" off the ground when th right front rim broke between the wheel studs all the way around the wheel. I was thrown (down hill side)clear of the tractor which was stopped from rolling by the backhoe being up.

The second time I was dumping dirt over a steep embankment wich looked to be solid gravel. underneath was about four feet of sand which gave way. From this point everything happend in slow motion I threw the tractor in reverse but culd not overcome the momentum. The the tractor went 8 feet forward threw me over the loader and rolled to the left, two 6" round birch trees saved my life when the tractor got hungup on them. In both of these instances I thought I was being as safe as I could be.

I now rarely use the tractor and only on a flat surface I would definately never buy another tractor without a heavyduty rops more likely to get a fops. Many men have been killed by objects coming out of a loader bucket and rolling down the loader arms.
