Here is one of my typical old balsam fir stands. It all has stump rot and in decline. Notice the woodpecker holes. Coming in under the fir is yellow birch and maple. I cut the fir last winter to release the hardwood.
During the cut I winched all of the trees up to the location of the tractor which is on a tractor road. I did not want any tractor damage in the stand.

A few photos of the work during the cut. It was slow work removing the rot to get a solid saw log and being careful to avoid to much damage to the young hardwood while felling and winching.

Here is the exact same shot as the first picture except the fir is gone. It was taken on 1/25/2015 the day after I finished. Pretty bleak looking even to me.

But then this - Another identical shot taken yesterday, 9/9/2015. It is starting to look like the beginning of a new hardwood stand.
My stumps are a little high because I try to make my cut above the worst of the rot in hopes of having better control of the felling direction.
