Much has to do with liability. Gasoline is FAR more flammable than diesel. If you use a pump sold for "Diesel" to pump gasoline and things blow up on you it's your fault no matter what. It's possible that there's also an issue of component rating (based on fuel type).
I have an 150 gallon diesel tank. Largest gasoline "tank" is 5 gallons. The former has an electric pump. The later is only hand-poured (and NEVER into anything that's running).
