just a collection of questions that dont deserve a post of their own. Thanks for any answers.

1. anyone ever heard of a pressure lube engine pumping oil to the air filter?
2. can i weld cast iron with a standard arc welder and 6013 rods?
3. do garden tractor transmissions use hardened metal for internal compnents?
4. when working out ratios of pulley systems i use the cirumference not radius/diameter right?
5. if i lengthen an exhaust pipe will it change performance?

thanks for any help
cheers alot

Howdy!

1. Not sure of the question, but if a motor briefly runs backwards, such as a poor performing one, my guess is oil could get in the air filter............
2. No, not with 6013 if you expect it to hold. Depends on the grade of the cast. There are rods specifically made for welding cast, but I don't know the number. A welding supply shop will have them though.
3. I would think internal parts are hard, but ????????
4. I used to know that, but alas, age...............
5. Depends. An inch or two probably not. 12 feet, I guess it would.

Hello Mith,
1) no, never heard of one, sounds undesireable if the element is paper.

2)welding cast iron is a job for a pro, most people will have a go at gas brazing instead and it's only a repair, not a fix. If it's a highly loaded part then brazing will not stand up to the use. I have been told that big diesel engine blocks are oven heated until white (I think white) and welded at this high temp and then carefully oven cooled.

3)my wheel horse hydro (charger 12, 1972-ish) does contain hardened parts where it matters, gearing, shafts etc. They are carburized providing a surface hardness of Rc 58-62 tapering to a core of Rc 28. The surface hardness provides wear resistance and the ductile core the necessary toughness. That's why it's still going and going and going.
Any good machine will have hardened parts, do you have a good machine?

4) use the circumference at the pitch diameter, it's the total travel of the belt that matters when it comes to ratios. If you don't know the pitch diameter just use the O.D. it's close enough unless you are putting men into space.

5)yes, any alteration to the exhaust will change it's performance. Will you notice? hardly likely mate unless you run a zillion bends on small diameter tubing while trying to heat a cab. Here's a tip... exhausts that point skyward collect rain, plan accordingly.

Best of luck,
Martin

1. Oil normally gets into the air filter on engines with too much blow-by that carries some oil into the air cleaner assembly. This happened on our daughter's Ford Escort. I remedied it by routing a 5/8" or 3/4" heater hose from the crankcase breather up and then back to the air cleaner. Any oil blown by would then drain back instead of up into the air cleaner. It worked.
2. Had a cast piece welded, e.g. holes filled in. Don't know how he did it.
3. Don't know.
4. Circumference = Pi x diameter. Diameter = 2 x radius. Doesn't matter whether you ratio circumferences, diameter or radai. The rest cancel out.
5. If you lengthen an exhaust pipe without increasing its diameter, you may get a decrease in performance because it will create more back pressure if you just lengthen the exhaust pipe.

Thanks for all the answers, much appreciated

I plan to add 3 feet, and one 90 degree bend, so if I use large pipe i will be ok, right. a coffee tin will keep water out

Martin, i have a several machines, i ask in general, the gearbox is off a westwood (do you have these in the US, they are a UK make?) but all the gearboxes are made by techumseh anyway.
the older wheelhorses are very good machines, i am on the look out for one to buy, i currnetly have a very unstandard 212-5 which is about '98 i think

thanks very much

I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didn't know.

Use nickle rod on cast, pre heat and cool slowly.
