one of my FEL cylinder rods have some fairly bad "flakeing" (for lack of a better word) toward the end of the cylinder rod.

what does one normally do?

wait till it starts wearing out the wipper/seal?
wait till it rusts really bad and pits?
fix it some how?
Replace it? (when?)

I wouldn't worry about it til it starts leaking. You could smear some grease on the exposed part and park it with the ram retracted to keep the rust from getting worse. If you use it alot or have a must do job, get it fixed (rechromed) when you aren't going to be useing it so it won't be down when you need it.

Well, if it's the new tractor in the picture, and under warrantee, I'd have the dealer fix it. If it has an expired warrantee, I would still raise he|| at the dealership. The chrome should not flake off in a matter of a year or two.

If it is coming off to where it will get into your hydraulic system, you don't want it to do that. If it gets into your system, you can have a very expensive problem. It can plug valves, passages and spools as well as play havoc in your hydro is you have one. If it is on the shaft outside of the main body or the cylinder, it might not be to bad but I would be afraid that it was flaking inside the body. If it is under warranty take it back to your dealer. If it is out of warranty, take it to a hydraulic shop. A good shop will either rechrome the shaft or they can replace the rod.

FWIW...I agree with Jerry. In that case, I'd get it fixed. No sense waiting for the worst to happen....either seal failure or screwed up hydraulic system (or both).

Ill snap a pic this weekend

Yeah, I'd get that repaired. It will cause premature wiper gland failure and probably an annoying leak sooner or later....probably right when you DON'T need it to happen. (Murphy's law)

I did not know that hydraulic rods were chromed.
Yours don't look like flaking but pitting. Do you make sure to pull or retract all of your hydraulics for any extended storage. I try to.

It looks to me like damage from handling rocks or something. Strange but that does not look like a susceptible location. If its mechanical damage there will probably be some raised spots.
