It is the old addage, if they want something they will figure a way to take it. Wondering what ideas people have come up with to keep their tractor and implements around when you don't have the luxury of a locking barn..

I am curious, too ... especially considering the common keys for tractors.

There are a few similar threads ... if you do a search ... , but I haven't seen anything that appears effective outside of locking your tractor and implements in a garage/barn. Hidden kill-switch?

Take off the wheels and put it on jack stands. :D

Seriously though, there are a couple of thing's you could probably do.

Like WiTel said, a kill switch to disable the ignition/starting system.

You could install a hidden fuel cut off valve.

When I was in the Army all of the vehicles had a chain welded to the floor or steering column. When not in use the chain was looped through the steering wheel and then you put a padlock on it. It prevents you from being able to steer it.

You could get a aftermarket ignition switch with a "real" key. You would have to rewire your switch but it would be better than the one key fit's all ignition switch.

You could install a hard wired alarm system on it. Basically run a wire from your house/barn to the tractor. The wire would be hooked to a 12 volt power source through a relay and when the wire is disconnected from the tractor it set's off a buzzer/siren/alarm in the house.

Let your imagination run wild.

I think about all you can really do is implement some common-sense measures, insure, and pray! I keep mine in a very inaccessable place on the back of the property behind two locked gates and locked to a large tree with a heavy cable. My neighbors watch out for any unusual activity or unknown persons on or around my property or the entire neighborhood since I can't be there as much as I'd like. I've thought about a game camera, but it would have to be infrared (not cheap for a decent one) to have any chance of not being detected and smashed or also stolen. I know that despite almost anything I do, a determined thief could make off with it. So that's where the insurance comes in (inland marine).

On my gas engine in my old IH I would take the battery and rotor home with me every night. The geniuses would try and put a battery in it and start it but not many of them carried a rotor for a late 70's IH 200C gas engine. :D

My old IH does not have a common tractor key switch, it has a unique key.
Sure they can cross over the solenoid and crank it, but with the anti dieseling solenoid and electric fuel pump, it would be a bit difficult to hot wire.
It also spends it's resting time locked in a shed.

Slowrev.. a few gator clip wires and you can almost hotwire anything.

I like the idea of removing the rotor button on the gasser's.. neat trick.. way better than a kill switch that is SUPER easy to bypass.

inthe end.. unless you are standing there with a gun.. someone will get your stuff if they want it.

A horse farm near me just had someone pull off the interstate.. cut the wire fence by the interstate, cut the back fenc e onthe horse farm, and come in and load up horses into a trailer, and a couple tractors from a barn, and high tail it back to the interstate, leaving the fence open and the rest of the horses to get out.

nice people..

Take out the starter relay. On my tractor that takes about 30 seconds as it's located in the fuse panel. With the FEL on the ground + an implement in the back on the ground - if you can't start the tractor to use the hydraulics, it's pretty difficult to move.

JPM -- what is Buddy, anyways? He kind of looks like a bullmastiff but I've never seen a black one.
