its a 20+ yr old jd 7200. i came to it in maine sitting in the barn under regular use untiol it gets cold. got told by owner its a "bear to start in the cold" has glowplugs but wont start under 40 degrees. Now knowing the owner the plugs prolly have never been changed the plugs. so he uses ether in a short burst to get it going. but when u crank it over it grind and clanks on the starter. whats going on and what should i do before the tractor dies.

You are describing the symptons of glow plugs not working. Either burned out or the feeder wiring, relays, or connections are shot.

Don't use the ether, you are headed to a piston or connecting rod failure.
