1. Do I need some kind of flow splitter? It seems if both valves are open center, neither would work because flow would be going through them simultaneously unless both (not likely) are in use.......
Bingo ! By your own reasoning process you have happened onto the reason for and the real definition of Power Beyond.
There have been many discussions on TBN - here is a typical one that may help clear things up.
An open-center 4-way valve's inlet port is connected internally to the exhaust port - the oil just flows through it until it's redirected to one of the work ports. To use the high pressure oil for an additional valve, a sleeve is installed in the inlet section of the first valve to block the connection to it's exhaust port. This "power-beyond-sleeve" is just a small part that changes the valve from open center to closed center. For an open-center hydraulic system to still work right, some other valve downstream has to be open-centered to the tank.
The confusion comes when marketers start packaging whole kits of parts as "PB" kits. There is no uniform definition of what is and is not included - because to make it all work right depends on the tractor and the other attachments it may have. Another source of confusion is that for many years JD hydraulics were closed center systems anyway (the variable pump flow was zero when all valves were centered). On closed center systems every valve had power-beyond and there was no need to give it a name.
There are so many differing ideas of what PB is, it takes some reading to understand what it really means to your tractor and your situation.
