noticed it is staying in 1st till oike 3krpm if you try to use more than normal throttle on take off.. then really accelerates like it should when it shifts gears. if you take off from a stop lamp normally, it shifts about 2krpm.. and otherwise feels normal.

drives fine thru rest of gears.. seems to otherwise operate normally.. just not getting speed on takeoff.. / that first gear funny shift thing.

trans shows oil at the hot mark onthe stick checked at idle.

any ideas?

I also have a 04 6.0 powerstroke F-250. They're very picky about what tranny fluid and engine oil is used in them. I use nothing but Ford Motorcraft oil in my engine and tranny. When my brother in law had his 6.0, he took his truck to the local minute lube. It never ran right for him. He asked me to drive his truck around while he was on vacation. While he was gone, I took his truck to the dealer for a service. Turned out cheaper than the minute lube place. The dealership changed his fuel filter, tranny fluid, and engine oil. After my brother in law took his truck back, he asked what I did to his truck as it was running much better than when he tossed me his keys. All it took was a simple fluid and filter change and two cans of Sea Foam in his fuel tank to get it running almost new.

There will always be a delay when you take off from the lights with these things. They're turbo charged, and they need a little time for the turbos to spool up to speed. Little rice burners get to think they got you until you walk away from them. It seems to surprise them that a 6,000+lb truck can waltz away from them like they were Geo Metros. :D

I use the motorcraft powerstroke dieseloil in mine.. I don't do my own trans service.. but let a local ford specialist do it.

looks like I may be calling the shop on monday for an appointment.

I'm big on changing the transmission fluid every 30k-40k miles. I've had some vehicles exhibit really bad symptoms that disappeared with a transmission fluid and filter change. Have you ever had your EGR cleaned? They can cause all sorts of odd issues. Mine went MIA. I don't know where that darn thing went...

Give the links I provided a try. There's several Ford mechanics as well as Ford Engineers who frequent the site. It may be something simple. Also, it'll give others the heads up if their trucks act the same way.

Definitely, a fluid and filter change can work wonders. Don't fall for the flush routine, it's necessary to change the filter to do it right. Have them drop the pan, change the filter, clean the pan, pull the plug and drain the converter. Mostly all the fluid is changed this way and you have a fresh filter. I would also stick with Motorcraft fluids and filters.

The only reason I'm driving my F-250 around is it gets better fuel economy than my F-150. Diesel fuel is cheaper than gas too.

I'm trying Ford's diesel fuel additive at the moment. The first tankful helped a little in the fuel mileage. The second seem to help more. Usually, I'll go 120 miles between full to the cap to the full mark (18 mpg). The first tank with the additive got me to 150 miles a little over 19 mpg). The second tank full with the additive got me 160 miles (A little over 20 mpg). This third tank full has me at 185 miles (I haven't refueled yet). Same gas station, same pump, facing the same direction, with my front tires on the edge of the cement and asphalt. So far, it looks like the additive is paying for itself.
