Default John Deere 4600 fuel guage problem

My 2000 JD4600 ran out of fuel the other day , guage said between 3/8 & 1/2 . Put fuel in and started right up. Dealer told me to check for bad sending unit by removing wire from it and grounding it to some shiny metal. I did and the gauge flip-floped to over full and back to empty after I removed wire. Sounds like that is problem solved, but now the dial on the guage has flipped around to the other side of the little peg that it rests against and I cant get it to come back around again. Any ideas out there? Thanks

Normally, there shouldn't be that much play in the needle assemby. You might try using a magnet against the face and see if you can get the needle back on the other side. Otherwise, new gauge time. Replace the gauge first and see if that fixes your register problem. If you need a gauge anyway, it's cheaper than a sender.

I would check the sending unit for a bad ground.

If your gauge jumped to full when you touched ground, then it should read empty with no power. I would check your sending unit, for a short, If your gauge reads empty, when you remove the sending unit hot wire, it's likely your sending unit.
