John Deere 850 electrical mystery

My 850 has got an electrical issue which prevents it from starting. I replaced the battery and the symptoms remain: turn key to left and all indicator lights glow brightly, turn key to right and a faint click comes from starter motor area and then all lights go dark... If you try to start it again in the next few minutes, lights don't illuminate and no click. Reading other forums, I've learned that it might be the cable or connection from battery to ground (I've checked that by bypassing that cable...which didn't change anything.) Or it could be the solenoid, voltage regulator or starter motor.
Questions from this amateur:
1) Is the solenoid attached to the starter motor. If so, when I buy a new starter motor, will I be replacing the solenoid, too?
2) How difficult is it to replace starter assembly?
3) Where is the voltage regulator? How hard is it to get at?
4) Which should I try first?

from what i know these are a few things you need to establish. from john deere it looks as if it has a yanmar diesel motor which probably has a denso or hitachi starter it should have solenoid attached to it. there will be 1 cable coming from battery and 1 cable coming from what is calleld the field hook up also possibly you have a permanent magnet starter so whatever you do do not hit starter housing at all to see if this will let it crank. the 1 wire not coming from the battery you can supply 12v power and see if it will crank make sure tractor is in neutral if this works the tratcor will start if it does you have a problem somewhere between key switch battery and starter and possibly bad solenoid by going to this wire you ar eliminating the solenoid and directing power to starter. report back if this works and will go further if need to.

I had the same kind of problem with my JD1050. I determined the problem was in the safety switches. I bypased the safety switches Temporarily to prove it.

It could be the ground as you suggested. However, I would look at the positive battery cable, probably where it connects to the solenoid. Also, as someone else suggested, check the small wire on that same lug which supplies voltage to the ignition switch. I don't think by your description that it is the safety interlock. That malfunctioning would prevent the tractor from starting, but, shouldn't affect the panel lights except when the switch is in the start position.

For some reason the Yanmars are really prone to glazing the battery terminals. I have had them start perfectly and then just stop. Your symptoms sound just like my experiences.

I've owned two 750's and I think the Yanmar engines on them are similar to the ones on the 850's. The solenoid should be made integral with the starter motor. If I were you, I would pull the starter motor off (a couple wires and two bolts probably) and take it to an alternator shop and let them check it out. It sounds to me like it's possible that something is putting a huge drain on the battery when the solenoid engages. If that is the case, then the most likely culprit is the starter. for sure I would clean bat terminals, cable ends.. inspect cable ends both sides, and then clean up the fram where ground hits, and the positive connections at the solenoid.. might also remove the starter and polis the mating flanges.

ps.. I wouldn't worry about vreg right now.. it has nothing direct to do with starting the tractor

I agree with sound guy. Clean all your heavy wire connections as in battery terminals, the ground where it attachs to the block and the heavy wire connection to the starter. It sounds to me as if you have some series resistance in one of the Main (heavy) cables. This will limit the high amount of current needed to turn a starter, but still allow enough through to light up your dash lights. If this fails look at the starter next. Always disconnect your ground first, by doing so, if you slip with a wrench when loosening the Pos+ you won't arcweld the wrench to the frame of the Tractor. You can also put a DVM across the battery terminals and see if the voltage drops significantly when you attempt to crank the starter, If so, your battery maybe on its way out as well.

I'll add one idea.
To check the battery cable itself, beside inspecting the ends.....Try bending the cable every few inches. If it is either stiffer (corrosion) or easier to bend (possible broken internally) in some areas. If so I would put new heavy gauge cables on. Diesel engines need good cables to start properly.
I like the checking the battery idea also. Most auto parts stores or even WalMart can check your battery for you.

I use a YM 2500 which is the Yanmar version of your JD 850 and had the same problem on my Ym 2000. Basicly the same set up. Easy fix just removed the starter blew out the 30+ Yr. old starter motor with a Air Compressor and cleaned the wires and connections to it and the solenoid. Checked my battery connections and wires. I did replace the Neg. Battery cable for a peace of mind.Still works Great I haven't had any problems with it for over 3 yrs. :thumbsup:
