I picked up a JD9 mower 2 years ago.
Finally after reading all the help on this forum I got it working and cutting really good.
2 days ago I was cutting and the sickle jammed and the slip clutch slipped just like it
was designed to do. I unjammed the sickle
and started mowing again. The mower wouldn't mow.

Well, I took it to the barn and opened inspection covers
and found I had a serious problem.
The rear half of the slip clutch broke into 3 pieces.
The pieces jammed the lower chain sprocket and broke
the chain. The sprockets have some minor damage that
I think I can fix with a file and it should work OK.

I removed the chain and upper shaft that attaches to the
drive shaft thru the upper plate on the gear case. I removed
the broken pieces of the clutch with a magnet thru the gear
case oil fill plug.

I can't figure out how to remove the circular plate on the lower
half of the gear case.

I removed the flywheel, pittman etc. I removed the bolts on the
tractor side of the gearcase.

It appears the plate should be able to be removed by sliding it
foreward. The nuts on both ends of the shaft have been removed.

The operators manual goes into detail about everything except
removing and replacing the lower plate.

If you have any experience and can help me with the removal the lower
cover I would appreciate it. Dave

Dave
A schematic of the parts assembly shows there is a gasket behind the cover you want to remove. Might be able to use a thin putty knife to slip in there to break it loose.

benthere, Where did you find that schematic? Could you reply with the web location? Dave

Thanks so much for the help. Hope I don't break the
cover. This is where I will have to be gentle I think???

beenthere,
Thanks, it worked. I got the cover off. Between the gasket and the bearing there was a lot of pressure holding on the cover. Back and forth prying on the cover got it all off.
Then there is the snap ring holding the chain sprocket in place. Got it off and off came the lower sprocket.
Then holding up the shaft and tapping it toward the back of the case, the rear shaft seal came out and the shaft came out the back of the case.
All is looking good. New seals, gaskets, slip clutches and a chain and I will be in business.
Hope this will help anyone who wants to fix their mower.
This site has always been a big help. Dave
