Turns out the carrier bearing was bad and the guide for the bearing was worn. The guide for the throw out bearing was worn. And the clutch cable had been stretched and was replaced. The cable may have been the incorrect one from day one.

I had similar problems with the PTO slipping on a 5105 I had. Was able to adjust it the same way and it solved the problem. It showed up when running a rotary cutter. It would get in tall grass and quit cutting. The motor never bogged.
