Recently, I had a problem (with a Scotts John Deere 2046) which I was gratefully pleased several on the discussion board properly diagnosed--a bad solenoid. When I put the tractor back together, there is backfiring. I did not really do much except some electrical work--fixed a ground wire, changed the solenoid. However, in the process, I sanded and oiled the flywheel. I moved it manually to sand it so when it passed over the magnetos ( I think that is what they are), the spark would be good. However, now the engine won't start. I am wondering what I could have done. Any help out there? I have spark, just bad timing it seems. Do I need to pull the flywheel and check something underneath? Could I have switched some wires?

Lost in Maryland.

There is a key to align the flywheel and crankshaft. Remove flywheel and make sure the key is not bent or sheared.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to pull the flywheel and check it.
