my 4 wheel drive will not engage. alll the linkage seems to be fine. is this an internal transmission problem

Or it could be a problem with the front differential, or the driveshaft going to the front differential.

If you can see that your front driveshaft is rotating with 4wd engaged, then the problem is most likely in the front differential.

If you cannot see the front driveshaft rotating with the 4wd engaged, then as you suggested the problem is likely internal with the transmission, or wherever it takes power off and sends it to the front axle.

You need to narrow down where your problem is first and it may be necessary to jack the tractor up on jackstands so the wheels can rotate freely. You might also have to remove a shield to see if the front driveshaft is rotating when it should be, unless there is a small port somewhere that you can access it to see if it is rotating. This should help you narrow down where the problem is. Of course, if you do jack it up on stands, be safe about it and use common sense. Good luck.
