Hi

I've got a Ford 1300 tractor (Shibaura LEK802 Two cylinder diesel engine) and it looks like the front main bearing needs replacing. Most main bearings I've come across, like the bigends, are made up of two halves that are clamped together onto the crankshaft with a pair of bolts. Not this engine. The bearing is circular (or a short cyndider) and appears to be pushed tightly into the round hole on the block with no fixings that I can see. However, this is a tight fit and doesn't want to budge. How does the old bearing come out and how do I replace it with hammering it out of shape?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi

However, this is a tight fit and doesn't want to budge. How does the old bearing come out and how do I replace it with hammering it out of shape?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It's probably a press fit (also referred to as an "Interference" fit). You'll most likely have to press it out. That will require removing the engine. If you know what you're doing you could try dry ice (to cool and "shrink" the bearing) and tap it out. I've never seen this done on an installed engine though.
I suggest you not tap on the bearing. Use a spud with the smaller diameter a few thousandths smaller then the bearing inside diameter.

I just put main bearings in my sister's 1300.
You'll need a bushing driver the correct size for those bearings. They are a "one piece" bearing and are truly more like a bushing than what we normally think of as a main bearing. I used a driver from my HF set of bearing race drivers, but I can't remember which one it was.
Before you drive the old bushing out, make note of how it's positioned in the hole, you'll need to line the new bushing up the same way so the oil supply holes remain open.

Once you have the old bushing out, just use a driver of the correct size to drive the new one in. They are a tight fit, but not so tight that they need to be pressed in or out.

Hope this helps.

And as Roy said..... there's no way to replace the main bearings without removing the engine and then removing the crank.

Many thanks Roy and Trader - that's really helpful. The engine is already disassembled - I'm putting in a second hand crank after the one in it snapped and I'd be tempted to leave the bearing where it is but the old crank was under size and the replacement standard so without new, standard bearings it won't actually go in.

None the less, thanks for the clarification at least now I know what I'm dealing with.

Exactly what I had to do with my sister's 1300. Seems to be a bit of a weak point with those 2cyl diesels. Took me a while to find a good used crank, but a new one is no longer available.

And if parts are scarce that side of the pond, they're even more difficult to get hold of here in the UK. Did you think about re-engining it? I've got a Kubota D850 which is perfect in terms of size, exactly the right power and rev range but, after looking into it, it's sooooo complicated. I'd have to hack a whole in the bell housing for a start (starter motor is on the opposite side and won't change on the engine due to injector and hyd pump in the way). The flywheels are different thicknesses which set ups issues with the clutch and clutch relaease bearing. Nightmare. Have you any experience doing something like this?

I did think about repowering with a different engine. My first thought was to try a 3cyl from a 1310. But all the used engines I found would have cost more than the tractor would have been worth since it would have been a franken-tractor.

All in all I made out pretty well. I found a used crank for $500, of course the new parts (piston rings, gaskets, bearings, etc) from New Holland were very pricey.

We decided to fix her up with the used crank and let her run for as long as she will run. If and when she goes down again it'll be time to part her out and invest in a newer model.
