john deere 5400 will not go in gear

i have a 1996 john deere 5400 4wd. when i run tractor and switch gears to reverse, nothing happens. I increase rpm's and motor revs up with no movement. It takes several minutes of switching gears for it to go into gear. Does anyone have any recommendations of how i can fix this problem or see whts wrong.

I will admit I will not be a lot of help, but you may want to post your question in the John Deere Owning/Operating forum. Some other information would be helpful the type of transmission as tractordata.com shows three types of transmissions, number of hours on the tractor, amount of free play in the clutch and amount of free play in the clutch remaining.
