If you mean literally across the switch, what you said sounds backwards. An open switch will have voltage across it, a closed switch will have very little voltage across it.

across? ( that's a very specific electronic concept ) when the switch is on, it's a dead short straight thru.. there will be NO voltage drop across it unless it has VERY DIRTY CONTACTS.
key off, the switch is open.. one side is hooked to power..the other side thru the coil primary to the points. If points are open, you will read NOTHING.. if points are closed, you will read battery voltage.

- 1947 Ford 8N 6v positive ground system front mount distributor sn 10101 all OEM & Deere 1050 with front loader and back hoe.
Thanks, makes sense. If volt meter is across switch contacts and switch is open/off, it reads no voltage, if switch is closed/on and points are closed, voltage is 6 and if switch is closed/on and points are open voltage is minimal or 0.
Have shorted switch with a jumper and still no spark.
Any ideas for what to check next? Dist. has new points installed, gap set, installed, new coil, new condenser. All this due to no spark at plugs. Put to bed in December and never woke up, was running fine.
So far nothing has yielded successful results. In past it was carb probs. and a rebuild solved them. This time, lack of spark at the plugs is the concern.
Looking for any good ideas.

Did you say you have a hot wire going to the coil?

Very interesting post good basic diagonistic review. I don't think this is the problem here but sometime during tune up a condensor can be grounded during installation. This will keep the tractor from starting I believe.

this statement makes no sense if parts are correct
where are you specifically measuring. ie.. where are the 2 test probes when you made these measurements.
you shoul d not read bat voltage across the closed switch with points closed.
