Ford 4400 Industrial tractor 3cyl gas

I have a very old Ford (50's ?) with a FEL...the tractor number is C 204620 Model 44021G..Can anyone help with the valve lash or gap?

Definatally not 1950's.

Thats going to be between 1965 and 1968. No PTO and Gas motor. Transmission code G, 4x4 manual reversing transmission.

You really need to get a book for it to give the exact specs. And whatever bood you get, will most likely cover your 4500 as well. MANY MANY similarities.

Also, if you want to know the exact year, there should be a third group of numbers/letters with those you mentioned. C204620 is your serial #, and 44021G is the model #.

In regards to manuals I found several choices on the internet first beginning with 9.99 for an Ford Operators Manual; 39 mid-range; all the way to 199 for the full 2 volume shop type repair manual from Ford's. What in your opinion would have the basic information I need versus the whole kibbutle?

This tractor is my right arm for the small garden( 3 acres) I do each year for church kitchens and food banks. The trouble started when I started trying to control Russian Olive Shrubs that were starting to take over the 17acres I have. (check thread I have in the Projects Forum) Not sure what happened but as I was pulling, pushing and tugging the larger ones, the engine started knocking more than usual. I also started getting some underhood smoke which I wasn't sure came from either a loose generator belt or later found that the oil pressure sensor was leaking oil from the side of the block. ( Piece of brush must have pushed against it because the oil dip stick nearby was slightly bent.) My friend (engine repair specialist) and I took off the valve cover and all looked ok except a few of the rockers could be tightened a bit. We we going to drop the oil pan and check for any metal or lead debris but the task looked overwhelming with the need to dismantle the entire block. We did drain the oil to search for debris and felt and magnet probed and again no tell tale debris. We also removed the oil filter and sectioned it and again reasonable clean. Also the oil was not "burned". So at present thought we would tighten the valve lashes to spec and replace the oil sensor and above all hope for the best.

Published unit code indicates a final assembly date of May 10, 1968 day shift.

8=1968
E=May
10=10th
B=Dayshift

Transmission
8=1968
C=March
19=19th

As far as a manual goes, the operators manual is about useless IMO. You need something that is actually a shop manual to get the specs.

I know my manual for my 5500 I believe covers the 4400, and probabally has the specs you are looking for, and I can give them to you if you want. But its going to cost you $10......

.....Just kidding.:laughing: I am at work now, and wont be home til about 8 or 9 this evening. If I remember, I can post the specs. But it really is worthwhile to get a manual. One like this Ford 3400 3500 4400 4500 5500 5550 Tractor Manual CD | eBay most likely has what you are after. And that may be the one I have??? I havent opened mine in awhile?

Periodic adjustments of clutch pedal, brakes and silly things like cold start procedures and control locations and operation are include. The OM is 'useless' only if you have operated this tractor or a similar unit extensively. Otherwise, it contains information that may not be specifically cataloged in a service or parts manual.

Point taken. I guess if one is new to tractors or new to that particular tractor, then an OM is a good start. I personally just find them usless and full of information that is already pretty obvious for someone who has been around tractors. IE: a full page to show where the oil dipstick and oil fill hole is:mur:

Docrocky: As to the specs, I did find this ford specs. - Yesterday's Tractor Co. Which seems to be about right. Just keep in mind, that lash specs (including those) are almost always with the motor "hot"
