Air Hose Reel Repair

My hose reel in the shop recently stopped retracting so I figured I would pull it apart and see what was up. Sure enough, the main spring had come out of the groove on the center shaft allowing the reel to just freewheel.

I tried putting the hook back into the groove and reassembling, but the it popped out almost immediately.

Anyone have any tips?

can you jimmy it with a zip tie or other piece of wire as a retainer or catch?

I tried playing with some safety wire, but I couldn't get it on there in any way that helped. The spring is very stiff and the first two coils are really close together.

This thing is really starting to aggravate me.

Fortunately I was able to get it back together. I finally got so aggravated that I just bent the ever living heck out of it until it was stuck in the groove well. I think I spent over 3 hours messing with this Chinese garbage.

Hopefully it stays functional.
