luckily the odometer works on both vehicles.. and that's what we are using to guess about fuel..

They've been putting it there since fuel injection became standard...the late 80s or so. From what I understand you don't get enough fuel pressure with an external pump.
Agreed, it's a PITA when it comes time to replace it. Just like having the fuel filter underneath the vehicle where it gets splashed with dirt, salt, etc. making it difficult to replace without damaging the fuel line.
