Try applying a little throttle when trying to shift.
Try putting your foot on the brakes to stop before shifting.
Both these ideas, throttle/brake, in combination, are what I use when the shifter hits a snag between H, M, L, R. The gears kinda have to be in just the right spot for the shift lever to drop into place. Extreme pressure on the shift lever is not the answer...a deft touch of the foot throttle and possibly followed by the brake does the job for me.
Not sure about the 900 but my 1100 does have a hydro pressure dump valve on the dash and also has one activated when the brake pedal is depressed for a few seconds.
I have gotten used to as I let up on the go pedal when comming to a stop and before the hydrodynamic braking kicks in I just slip the shifter out of gear while there is still slack in the drivetrain and only use the hydo release valves when parked on the hillside and need to change gears or at startup.
