8n will fire but not start??

yes, I am iced in and just got a new Powermatic Tablesaw. I am trying to get that put together and get all this crap out of my woodworking shop, which is my two car garage, to make room to get the tractor back in, it has been windy and cold so sitting outside is not good until the wind dies down and I can spray the starter fluid to see what happens. I have read other threads on other sites and most the have an original carb just put a new float and rebuilt it and they were good. I posted a new thread asking if anyone knew where I might get a couple 3 X 19 wheels for the front of my tractor. That salt water eat the back two up and I replaced them and now the front are going to go. May as well change them out while I am at it.

You know, I can leave the 3 point hitch up and come out the next morning and it will still be up. It may have fallen an inch. This is a good tractor. no oil leaks and it is sound and will be again. I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the update. Anyone that sells TISCO should be able to get you some wheels which would be most tractor dealers.Tisco Tractor Part Mart: Reliable Tractor Parts You Need. Fast :: RIM 19X4.00 6 BOLT (8N1015A) Do you have fluid in your tires? If you have calcium in them it will eat the wheels up.

Hi Pete I've read all of this & from the fact that this started when you were working it . Mine did a similar run rough & hard start, turned out to be the head gasket burnt between 2&3 cylinders ,on my 51. Now on my 50 it was just simply two plug wires mixed up. Wouldn't be too concerned about carb kit ,both of mine ran fine after disassembly & cleaning with spray cleaner ,one sat 2years the other for 4.5 years .Just my :2cents:

Well,I guess you fellas have never timed an engine by marking the crank pulley? Or are you saying there is NO crank pulley? I'm saying that this is the absolute best way to time an engine. According to CarlK's link,the timing is not so foolproof as SG makes out.
I'm also telling Pete that the distributor could be sending intermittent spark. PROBABLY Pete has a fuel problem,but there are MANY things that can go wrong with simple ignition systems also.
I'm a mechanic,in general,and i have not claimed to be a tractor specialist. don-ohio ^)

So how do you determine TDC on an 8N?

Flathead = plug wrench and something long that fit's in the plug hole.

Easier said than done on an 8N. The spark plug hole in the head doesn't line up with the piston. There is also very little room between the head and the gas tank. I successfully statically timed my front mount 8N the first time I tried it using the I&T manual. Its really easier than it looks. I copied these photos off Yesterday's Tractor site. Its the best source of info on old tractors. I suggest Pete also search there for help.

why booger something when the CORRECT way is easy.

Besides.. getting tot he crank pulley requires a pocket gnome and minature ant sized tools. it's cramped up there with a front mount.

Ahh.. so you are saying that you know MORE than the engineers that designed and built the N... as they are the ones that devised the way to static time it.

I'm happy to meet someone that knows more than the people that designed the machine did.
