1987 CaseIH 255
New to me 1987 CaseIH 255, regular steering, non-live PTO. I was trying to use my scraper blade and was trying to adjust level and rate of drop. I ended up unscrewing the drop speed knob all of the way out of the unit.

Question # 1. Did I lose any pieces? Sounds like a silly question, I know, but the parts diagram I have shows a couple of washers and a clip of some sort that appears could fall out in this scenario. Doesn't seem like Case would build stuff this way because I can't be the only one who does dumb stuff now and again. (It does have left handed threads.) The drop speed control seems to be working fine now that I have read my manual and am using it correctly. But I wonder if the possible "missing pieces" has anything to do with....

Question #2. the height control on the 3 pt lift isn't working at all. Lift is either all the way up or all the way down. It seemed to be working on my rather short test ride with a bush hog, but maybe it was just bottomed out. Is this problem connected to the drop speed control? If not can someone suggest a starting place for fixing?

Thanks for any help.

Case IH didn't "build stuff this way"......Mitsubishi did. :D The 235(234), 245(244) and 255(254) were all Mitsubishi made tractors for IH/CIH. They are dependable, high quality tractors...mine is 30 yrs old now and still runs/operates like it did when I bought it. I own a Mitsubishi MTE2000D....nearly identical to the 254/255. Main difference is the CIH machines used the K3E engine and mine uses the K3F.

I have had the drop speed apart years ago and unfortunately don't remember too much about it. It does have a circlip in the parts diagram.....hard to imagine that this wasn't to limit "travel" of the pilot screw. Can't for the life of me remember exactly how it worked though. I am thinking the ears of the clip went through slots on the pilot screw sleeve.....just not 100% ( or even 50%) sure though. No guarantee a previous owner didn't have it apart and lose those pieces?

The 2nd issue is probably the linkage. I have had trash get in the relief valve and the control valve ( both can be CAREFULLY disassembled and cleaned) but I doubt the valve itself is your problem. Since you have a parts diagram, First check the "Pivot arm" (part 35), it connects to the rockshaft and should have a roll pin holding it in position to the shaft. If the pivot arm plate is loose or doesn't rotate with the rockshaft it will cause lift control issues. If it is OK, try to manually move the "feedback arm" ( part # 28) and see if the 3 point moves with control. You may have to loosen or take the control rod and spring off to do this. If the 3 point lifts/lowers properly when you manually move the feedback arm, you will have to adjust the linkage....which will probably take some playing with it to find the right adjustment. If you are still having the problem, visually inspect the entire linkage and make sure that every increment of lever movement makes a corresponding movement along the entire linkage system.

Forgot to mention....I guess the first thing I would do concerning the 3 point lift is adjust the draft control lever ( lever next to the 3 point control lever). Frankly, I have never messed with mine much but see if it's position isn't causing the problem. The draft linkage is tied into the 3PH control linkage BTW.

Thanks, Kernopelli, for the quick and looks like will be a very helpful reply. I see many replies that don't seem to answer the question, yours does. Looks like I'll be playing mechanic on Saturday. Like I said the tractor is new to me and it seems just the right size for my needs and "simple" enough to keep on working. Don't think I have draft control - just the one lever to the right of the seat.

Thanks again,
Bob
