Of the three things in the "fire triangle", spark is the only one that should be that much like turning off the switch - if you have one of those cheap "neon screwdriver" testers, you might try holding the tip of it next to the spark plug wire - if it blinks when there's spark, it could maybe tell you EXACTLY when/if spark goes away.

Assuming this works (haven't tried it, just know they're pretty susceptible to extraneous signals sometimes) it would show you whether the spark quits BEFORE the engine stops turning (as in, when the engine STARTS to die) or AFTER (as in, spark was still there til the engine physically stopped turning)

Actually, if the cheapy screwdriver doesn't work you might need a "tic tracer", which is designed for "proximity" testing -

Main thing is, if there is still spark when the engine is in the process of dying but still turning, that would tell you whether to look for a bad/grounded connection or switch, or something else entirely.
