Default John Deere 5420 adjusting PTO Linkage

I have a 5420 that is slipping when bailing hay and I am told that there is a way to adjust the linkage to take the slack out. Does anyone have any guidance on how to do this?

Only thing I can think of is their a cable underneath? Might it have started fraying?
What size baler are you running? If you are running big round bales, you are possibly over working it. A baler takes more and more hp as the round bale grows. Many folks will make smaller diameter bales if they are low on hp. My buddy says he can bog down his Deere or IH (99 and 105 hp respectively) by trying to bale a max diameter 6' bale on his deere 566 baler. A 5420 only has 65 PTO hp, don't some balers have a clutch in them to protect the tractor?

A 99 or 105 HP should run a JD 566 with no problem if hay is below 15% moisture. IIRC JD spec's state 75 PTO HP minimum. Does 5420 pto clutch operate similar to 10 & 20 series RC tractors whereas brg applies pressure by brg pushing on clutch fingers for engagement?
    Thanks,Jim

I think our 5420 only is rated 65 pto hp. I always thought the parasitic loss was high because the spec'd the engine at 84 hp.

I guess what I'm trying to say on the baler is that the last foot of diameter is the most demanding and that if you are pushing the limits, just make 6" smaller bales.

You're correct Tratordata states 81 engine HP 65 pto HP 276 cid(4.5L) for the 5420. I've seen the 276 in some models over 105 HP. My kubota M7040 is listed at 70 engine HP,65 pto HP 203 cid(3.3L). Also I agree the last 6" diameter of making a rd bale requires a lot more umph.
