This morning I pulled a piston from an Allis B. It has numbers on the top rod bearing: CGB 207460. These are the only numbers I have found. There was no lower bearing. Though it isn't too important that I find out what these mean, I am just curious. I find this morning that the block is cracked between two pistons, probably my fault when putting pressure on the rod extraction. The rod and sleeve came out together. I only have less than $600.00 invested in the tractor so at this point I will be parting it out as I have already stripped nearly everything that is usable. The rest goes to the junk yard. Any info on the numbers would be appreciated. I still have an Allis C that I will start on and attempt to get it started. It's in better shape than the "B" so I will make that my winter project.

Thanks a lot. That was the information I was actually looking for. There was no wear on the bearing or crank. It was my intention to restore but having worked for four months trying to get the piston out and then seeing the cracked block, I was curious as to whether the crank could have been standard. From other clues I had determined that it was probably a low mileage machine. It had just sat too long in the weather and the rust could not be impregnated with the penetrating fluids I was using. My next attempt will be on an Allis C which should be in much better shape as it has only been setting for a couple years. Thanks again and the best of luck.

I'm almost ashamed to ask this stupid question, but it has to be done. In your opinion is there anything that can be done to save this engine now that I have a crack between two piston holes? As you know, the engine is sleeved. I have no idea of the ramifications of this crack if it is not on a water route, and I don't even know where the water routes are. I have put so much work into this machine I hate to abandon it now but perhaps it's time for the scrap heap. Your thoughts please.

I would think it could be saved, depending on how extensive the crack is. I've seen many cracked blocks sleeved and put back into service. I'm interested in the story (and maybe some pics) as to how you got the sleeve out with the piston, and how your "extraction method" may have cracked the block?

I don't know that I've ever seen one repaired, that was cracked between cylinders. Probably best to take it to someone, that does that type of repair. Here, we have Columbus Coldweld, that does some amazing repairs, but, it comes with a price. Years back, it was half, or more of a good block. I'm pretty sure those have a wet sleeve, where water completely surrounds the sleeve. It would have to be magna fluxed, and check for other damage. Then if they would decide they could fix it, weld, then machine to close tolerance, so the sleeve deck height is the same as others. Even at that, doubt they give over a 90 day warranty.

You could have well over the price of a good used block. There are a couple on ebay right now for $175 + $125 shipping, and $200 + 125 shipping. I saw 20, B's in salvage yards on TractorHouse, but nothing close to you.

You may want to join here, and ask those questions: AllisChalmers Forum They'd know more about it. Or, know of a decent block somewhere.

Personally, I'd be on the search for a good used block. They are still out there, just not sure how common they would be in your area. Here, they were plentiful, with lots of them being sold. I've seen a few sell at consignment sales in running condition, though pretty ragged sell for $175, to $250.
