5105 John Deere
Hello Everyone

Hope everyone enjoyed their Mother's day :)

I pulled my radiator off my John Deere 5105 and hauled it to the repair shop this morning, At $500 for a new one, I am saying my prayers this one can be fixed. SOOOO, while I had the radiator off and easy access I thought I would do a complete radiator flush. The manual says to remove the thermostat. Can anyone tell me exactly how to remove the thermostat cover? Is it the bolt on top? The exhaust seems like it would be in the way..
Anyway....SMART ME .. I thought to add the pictures beforehand...:) Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

The thermostat housing is held in place by two bolts. It looks like someone has replaced your cold start sensor with a blanking off bolt.

Which 2 bolts? Are they in pic 1 or pic 2 "What is a blanking off bolt"? Thanks!!

Please see 2 attached pdfs.

The following adds to what is in the pdfs. Start by taking the bypass tube out of the rubber elbow. Then turn to left side of the tractor and pull it. It maybe a little hard to get out, but it does come out. Take off the exhaust pipe at the four bolts/nuts that connect it to the muffler. Good time to paint the exhaust pipe, with high heat paint. You should see the 2 bolts that you need to remove.

You may want to install the sensor on the thermostat housing that has been removed part # is RE503242. There should be a plug in the back of the injection pump, this is where it plugs in.

Do NOT over torque the thermostat cover or you will crack it.

Thermostat cover cap screws
Torque....................................................................... 50 N瀕 (35 lb-ft)

Here is what that sensor does and was taken from engine manual.

To comply with the exhaust emissions regulation, the timing of injection pump should be around 6 to 9 degrees before TDC. These timing values do not allow proper start-up operations when engine is cold. To ease engine start-up, a cold advance system gives to the injection pump a temporary over-timing.

When coolant temperature is below 50 C (122 F), the solenoid valve is activated and opens the cold advance circuit.

You might look around first. A&I probably makes the radiator and you may find it cheaper.

Don't know about shipping

THANKS EVERYONE Especially you @JD5210 for taking so much of your time to give me directions. I got the radiator and sensor ordered ( haven't pushed the send button yet) comes to $463.95. I want to be sure the wiring is there for the sensor. It says 7 to 14 days delivery....YUK! I don't see why I can't start the tractor up for about a minute and back it out of my workshop as long as nothing hits the fan blades. It is SLIGHTLY in the way :)

Your welcome. Let us know how things work out. You might consider taking a look at selectmanuals.com and get the tech manual, it is 29.95.

Here is a link if you want to order it from JD. It also includes an online link to the owners manual.

I HATE to be a pain in the rear to you guys but before I hit send on a $470 order I need to check. I looked everywhere and the only wiring harness I see is this one in pic 2 & 3. It's more of a split harness for blinkers and such IMHO. I think it could be too short ( might not be ) even IF it was the right one which I am fairly certain it is not. Could the sensor in pic 1 be the coolant sensor you are referring too?
Thanks Guys...I can't Thank Ya'll enough for your help. Living with just the wife up here on this Mt. I don't have as much access to to the world as most people do....having someone to ask questions gives me a HUGE piece of mind.....
