I have a John Deere 755 with 2100 hrs on a 3 cylinder yanmar. Tractor has quite a bit of blowby through the vent tube. I was wondering if this was a sign the motor needed rebuilt. Tractor is running with plenty of power. Just alot of smoke.

I would be preparing to rebuild it...
If you've got blowby , excessive oil consumption and pressure loss, excessive smoke and maybe a loss of compression, its time to rebuild before it gets really expensive...Its only going to get worse and it could destroy itself in the process...

I just noted your glowplug thread...

hard starting or failure to start (especially in cold weather) can be caused by faults other than worn engine (blocked filters ,glowplug failure etc) , but in your case I would expect that the two go together..

I'd also try to return it to the guy you bought it off...

How much did you give for unit? Did you buy it knowing/thinking that a rebuild was in your near future?

Diesels need compression to run. You might have a problem here. The blow by would tell you the rings are leaking compression which in turn would give hard starting.

How many hours?
New or used?
Have you done the oil changes yourself?
Diesel rated oil?
