I have been on Air Force One ..... in fact a couple of times. I guess you can call it one of the perks when you work at an airport. The interior is beautiful with a command center on the top level, which I was given a tour of. This was back when Clinton was in. There is a small oval office inside. They told me sit in the chair and put my feet up, so I did. I put my feet up on the table while flipping through his CDs. I have met George H Bush, Carter, Regan and of course Clinton. I got pictures of Bill (Clinton) and I and me and Al (Al Gore). I have met a long list of canidates and a bunch of actresses, actors and bands to include Stevie Nicks. I met Prince Charles too. I guess I never thought to much about it but it is kind of funny. Just thought I share.

I have always lived within a few miles of that airport and spent a lot of time there. The guy across the street from me owned the FBO and I was friends with his son, so we went flying quite a bit. I ended up working at the airport for 6 years, advancing to line chief. I got to empty some trash from AF1 when Reagan was in town. Didn't get to go in it, though. They handed me the bag. I felt special. We met lots of celebrities. That was back in the day when bands like Heart, Genisis, Foriegner, Kiss, Yes, ZZ Top, Bruce Springstein, etc... still performed at small local theaters and Universities. Tickets were always under $20.00. Usually, if you cleaned the airplane, the manager would leave you concert tickets at the window for the show. Usually they were great seats. The University of ND is located here. That draws some very famous people and lots of money, nice jets, etc... to the airport. The most impressive display of a corporate fleet I ever saw was from W.R. Grace corporation. The man that ran the corporation was, I believe, Peter Grace. His daughter(s) attended St. Mary's across the road from ND. He would come into town in a 727. Just him and his wife. A 727! Anyhow, one day these small white jets with green strips and Grace N numbers start showing up. Then they start getting bigger. Then the old man shows up. All in all, 10 jets from a small Lear to the 727 are sitting on our ramp. Crazy amount of money spent that day.

Wow, unimaginable. Almost "sloth" really. Certainly another world than the one I live in!

Yeah. Sometimes I thought that when I worked out there. And sometimes I was happy to have a paycheck. In my opinion, it takes money to make money. The people that create jobs are the people with the money. I have no problem with people spending crazy amounts of money if they are employing folks at a decent wage.

However, I wonder if I had that kind of money if I would be so eager to part with it so easily. For instance, on a Notre Dame football weekend it was nothing, and I mean nothing, for us to see a hundred corporate jets show up and take on thousands and thousands of gallons of fuel. Just for a football game! Until you realize that they are not there for the game at all. Most of them are schmoozing with business prospects, possibly making more jobs.

A real conundrum for me.

For some, spending more than $40 for a lawn mower is unheard of. I think it's all a matter of ones perspective. However, when you're six feet under, your six feet under, and no amount of money is going to ever change that.

To make matters even worse, it's a Notra Dame game

Here is what it looks like at the end of our driveway. Our road runs north and south and the drive starts off uphill to the west.

Views from the end of my driveway are more interesting on grasscutting day when all the New Hollands are up on the levee mowing the grass.
