Interesting thread. As an avid hunter, I enjoy reading about hunting elsewhere. Got my first buck of the year. For SC , this is fairly decent , about 200 lbs. I am amazed at the size of that doe in the first post. Dang, I've see smaller horses . They don't get that big here!
I almost passed on this buck but had a new rifle and my new girl friend in the stand, so decided to pull the trigger ! Now I'll focus on bow hunting for does and hope to see a bigger trophy.

Thanks for the compliment on my doe...I have no idea what she dressed out at, but I know how I felt after a 3/4 mile drag back home. They don't grow a doe much bigger than that up here...

I killed a buck in eastern Canada a few years back. Man , it was huge and unbelievably fat. It grew fat on all that corn. Here deer have almost no visible fat and a big buck is over 180. Does rarely get over 140 lbs. Your doe was massive in my eyes.

I thought about commenting on using a .357, as my initial thought was it was light, but sounds like the author knew what he was doing. And at close range and accurate shooting, dead is dead, regardless of what weapon is used. I often use my.44 mag Smith and Wesson, and it does the trick. Last year I killed deer with my bow , crossbow, revolver , muzzleloader, and both my .270 and. .308. My latest rifle is a little 7mm /08 and it made a clean kill. But my Nosler ballistic tip did not pass through, but I could see copper protruding through the far side. But it went thru both shoulders and this was a pretty big body. But I found not one speck of blood on the 75 yards he ran. Luckily, I saw him fall so recovery was easy.

I appreciate the comment.... and like to THINK i know what I'm doing. Fact is, (on paper) it IS a little on the small side for white tails... but has been quite effective. The round will likely never pass thru, but gets decent expansion.... it's not failed me. (Knocking on wood) Someday i hope to grow up and buy a big boy lever gun.... someday. I've yet to have a deer go much further than 50y before laying down.... I suppose if i had different results i might feel differently about the caliber. (knocking on more wood)

Several guys down at my gun club have taken deer with the 17hmr round that's out and about now. Wanna talk small? I'm new to the club, so i keep my mouth shut, but that's just too small for my comfort zone. Just shows that a well placed shot with any caliber will be effective.

Great thread... who doesn't love talking about Hunting?

Funny, I shoot a deer with a high power 7 mm and no pass through and no blood. But shoot one with my bow and the wounds are huge on both sides and you can see blood on the ground from my tree stand. These new bows and broadheads are wicked. More deadly than a rifle

Just got around to cutting up my doe today. Ended up with 18 packages of stew meat, 19 packages of steaks, and 5 huge roasts. Figure about 65-75 lbs of meat in total.

You guys sure have some big deer. If one weighs over 100 pounds around here, it's in the local news!!!!!

Congratulations. Season opener for us is this Saturday. Halloween Party Friday night and then up early and in the deer blind to see if anything is out and about. :)

Nice deer all. And HCJ, that is a fine SC buck. I have a nice 10 pointer that is not as big as that.

Got lucky this morning.Scored on a 8pt.about 160lbs.(will weigh when I get some help).Took him with my old school .444 Marlin lever.I hadn't hunted with it in a while so decided the first week of rifle I would try it.
It's been a little slow with the deer movement but I think this coming cold front will get them on their feet.
Unfortunately I am done until late Muzzle-loader season.I hope to help the kids and grandkids get a crack at one.
Hunting during the week there is no one around;luckily I was able to drive the tractor right to the deer. No dragging.

Congrats^^. Good luck with the grandkids!

I'm going to get out this weekend and try to find a mule deer worth shooting. They are just starting to chase does around here since the last couple of nights have been cool.

Nice looking Buck NYBird! Congrats!

The deer have also increased their movement around my way. Last Friday evening I had a herd of 10 pass my stand. I was able to draw on one, but she never gave me the right shot. Had I been out with a gun, I'd likely be attaching pics. ML season starts here November 8.

Great thread... keep the venison coming.
