Just thought I'd post some pics of a mod I made last month. Bottom line, I'm really happy, but in hindsite, I really think it was fine the way it was. I mostly did this to satisfy my own curiosity.

Can you post a picture of the side where the exhaust comes out?

Is that shield in the top of the engine cage mounted to dflect heat from the hydraulic cooler? Why did you do that?

Hey Tim, the purpose of that shield is two fold...it enables the hydraulic cooler fan to only pull in air from outside the engine compartment cooling the oil as effeciently as possible and it also directs the air generated from the engines blower housing over the muffler and out the holes in the top of the cage. The first heat shield also has a bend under the muffler Shielding everything forward from heat and directing air to the backside of the muffler. there is no more run on. I do like the sound better but I cant say for sure wether its quieter.

Where did you put the battery?

Dear Kris,

Looks like a great modification, beautifully executed.

What did you paint the heatshields with?
If you didn't use heat barrier paint, did you consider it?
How much clearance is there between the hydraulic cooler and the shield?

All the best,

Peter

The battery is located underneath the muffler and heat shield, similar to where it is i believe on the pt 180... im not sure where it is on the 422.

Hey Peter...I really wish you would of told me about that paint before!!
Didn't even know about it. As far as clearance between the cooler and the heat shield, on picture 2 you can see if you look carefully how its angled down to just above the air cleaner cover. At its mounting point its only 2" away...I mounted it with 2" threaded couplers that threaded to the existing oil cooler mounting bolts then simply bolted the shield to the coupler.

Dear Kris,

I like the threaded coupler touch!

There are a number of companies that make either insulating paint or additives:
Dynamat
Lizard Skin
Insuladd
HyTech

Indykote specializes in coating exhaust systems for mine equipment, but there are lots of folks that will do it for cars.

I have only used the Dynamat and one other product, the rest are just from Google. I know several car rebuilders that swear by these and other thermal coatings for reducing under hood heat, noise in the car, and turbo performance (by keeping the exhaust gases hotter.)

Since one of them used to his rebuilt mustang to beat out the entire CA/NV Ferrari club at their annual Nevada city hill climb, I'm inclined to believe them. (He wasn't invited back for some reason, but then again he sold the car and bought a house in the bay area with it. Can you say megabucks?)

I've been seriously considering coating the PT exhaust, just to reduce the fire hazard in case of an oil spray.

All the best,

Peter
