I agree with Craigy2; it does sound like you have air in the drive/drive control circuit. The pop could be burping air in.
Getting stronger with use certainly sounds like flushing air from the motor circuit.
I can think of two main ways to get air in
- Could you have gotten air in during a filter change?
- Could there be a loose connection anywhere on the vaccum side of the intake to the tram pump?
