Power Trac PT-422
I bought a used PT auger power unit with my PT 422, but couldn't test it at the time of the sale because the hoses were dry rotted and cracked.
I took the unit to a hydraulic shop. They put new hoses and fittings on the power unit. They also checked it on a bench and said it was working fine.
I took it home and hooked it up to my PT 422. Started the tractor and flipped the PTO. Nothing happened. Can you please help me trouble shoot the aux hydraulics?

Thanks
Frank

Is your PTO solenoid engaging? It is located in the engine compartment on the driver's left toward the front. Check and see if it has a nominal 12 volts with the switch on.

Not exactly sure where the solenoid is located. Is it just behind the starter, under the muffler?

Is the solenoid sitting on top of the spool valve? In the picture it is a couple of inches from the red battery cable going to the starter.

Yes, I am pretty sure that is it. My layout is different.

reach down and grab that solenoid and twist it back and forth a few times (if it will move). Then turn your key on and flip your PTO switch. I don't know your system at all but unless there is a kill I don't know about you should feel the solenoid click. My feeling is that you are missing a wire on the solenoid (Solenoid is an electric valve that is electro magnetically operated). I am not sure, but it looks like you are missing a ground wire. Then again, maybe the chasis is ground.

Jeez am I stupid. Have you run your mower or the PTO with any other device? If you have and they work the issue is that you either did not get the hoses connected right or there is an issue with the auger.

It appears there is a wire broken off the solenoid. The only attachment I have is the power auger and I recently had it tested. It is okay.

Do you know where I can find another solenoid? Can I pull the solenoid to find out the make and model number without shutting down or draining all the hydraulics?

Again, i don't know your system but you should be able to remove it. As for finding a replacement, JJ will have the answer.

Under the solenoid there is should be a standard nut holding the solenoid cartridge in the aluminum block. Just reef on it to open.

Is there enough of a stub of wire for you to solder another on. It is your ground wire that is missing (near as I can tell) so it wouldn't pose an electrical issue.

Oh, one other quick way to determine if your PTO is working is to start your engine and run at idle and turn the switch on, if the engine bogs down, your PTO is working.

If you pull the solenoid, be sure to make sure you can plug the hole because IF the hole is lower than the hydraulic oil level you can lose a lot of oil overnight. Just a precaution, but worth being concerned about.

I believe the black part is removable and the base part stays screws on

Call PT and order a new one.

You might be able to salvage the solenoid by digging around the wire and solder a new wire.

Apply 12v to it and see if it still works.

You might be able to replace the valve with one like this.
