Spike aerators add to the compactation of the soil. In the basackwards Ag. U i went to in the 50's that aerartor already was a museum item. Core, vertislicers, slicer any other action that removes part of the compacted soil is necessary for your roots to spread.

A very good thing is to topdress (compost) at the same time that will help to feed the turf roots and allow further growth.

After we core aerate the lawn, what do we do with the plugs? Clean them up, leave them, rake them around or what? Just wondering, as I plan to do it this year.

My preference is to core aerat in the fall and just leave the plugs to rot over the winter.
In the spring when I aerat the first lawn cutting takes care of the plugs.

If you have a welder, you can build yourself one by using the core aerator spoons at $ 2.99 each and an old water tank.

I was thinking about modifying the spike aerator by welding core aerator spoons to the spikes and adding support wheels. Anybody got any thoughts on this. I need 64 spoons which will cost a little under $200. Should I weld or bolt the spoons on or maybe screws?
