Spike aerators add to the compactation of the soil. In the basackwards Ag. U i went to in the 50's that aerartor already was a museum item. Core, vertislicers, slicer any other action that removes part of the compacted soil is necessary for your roots to spread.
A very good thing is to topdress (compost) at the same time that will help to feed the turf roots and allow further growth.
