Thought you guys would like to see a snowblower that I converted for use with the PT422. I took a 42” single stage snowblower and made new wings with a drift cutter to get 48” width. Used the same hydraulic motor as the PT lawn mowers since it was the right speed. (Tip speed of the auger is 5000 feet per minute). Took off the vbelt shieve, and coupled the hydraulic motor with a lovejoy coupling. Fabricated a hydraulic motor mounting plate, PT quick attach plate along with hydraulic hoses and quick connects.

I also installed a powder cover in the chute that can be removed for wet snow. The caster wheels behind the quick attach plate allow you to angle the snowblower back and ride on the caster wheels with the SB cutting edge 3” above the surface. Also made quick pin attach skid shoes which are for use over grassy surfaces or gravel, and then you can quickly remove them via a pin (put back in holders upside down) and ride on the regular skid shoes with the cutting edge right on the surface (for asphalt). The shoes help over soft grass where the caster wheels may sink in.

The last piece was getting the chute rotation part. As you can see in the pictures, it is at the perfect height sitting down, and when you have the blower raised, you just have to reach a little higher.

Snowblowing takes a lot of horsepower. That’s the where the hydrostatic transmission comes in. You just modulate your speed based on the amount of snow. With the lift height, you could lift the SB to full height and nibble away at them.

The project was more of a challenge than need for me. We do not get enough snow around here anymore to justify having it. At the right offer, I’d be willing to part with it to fund another project. Send me a PM if interested. Next on my list is to make a stump grinder.

Hope the pictures load

Duane, great job on the snow blower. Now talk to me about those wheel weights I see on the fronts. Reg

Reg,

I have the wheel weights on front to reduce crabbing when plowing. It seems to help.

Cool!
I haven't even used my PT snowblower this year.

Let's not hold back. where do you get them, how much do they weigh, how do they attach, etc..

Duane,

I need DETAILS! I've got an older Wheel Horse snowblower attachment sitting around waiting for me to get to it. When I sold the WH tractor (mistake), I kept the snowblower for the PT, but I failed to record the WH engine pulley size, so I haven't been able to determine the appropriate rpm's for the auger shaft. I hope you can rectify that for me...

Reg,

The wheel weights are 50 lbs apiece that I got with a Toro/Wheelhorse. I used long carriage bolts through the rim to attach.

Gravy,

An optimum target speed for your auger is 4500 - 5000 feet per minute. If your auger is 11" or 0.91 feet then the circumference is (dia * pi) which equals 2.86 feet. Divide that into 4500 - 5000 = 1574 to 1748 rpm. On mine, there is a gear reduction between the input shaft and the auger via chain sprockets of 2.125, therefore my input shaft needed to turn at 3344 - 3714 rpm. The same high speed hydraulic motor PT uses on the lawn mowing decks at 0.580 cubic inches per rev fit the bill perfectly.

Duane,

Thanks! That gives me exactly the kind of data I need to make mine work. I probably won't get it done before the need is over for this year, but I plan to be using my PT for many years to come!

I thought I would bring this to the top to ask a question. I remember reading in another thread that duane said that his 425 didn't quite have enough guts for this snow blower, after all blowing snow is all about hp. So this got me thinking about Power Trac's snow blower. They have a 2 stage blower. Does a 2 stage blower require less power to operate effectively? Would it be a better choice to adapt a 2 stage to the PT?

The wet, heavy stuff is what caused the problems. The dry stuff was not a problem. I think this is the same with all snowblowers.
