When should I use a flail mower (with standard hammers or blades) Vs. a MMM finish mower on an expensive orchard/field on a hill?
The property is approximately 3 acres with an Asian pear orchard in the middle.
I ask the question after I purchased both units....
I have a 60" MMM an a 64" Flail on a Kubota B7800. I use a 60" rotary mower to knock down the winter brush, then switch over to one or the other?
When I take off the FEL the MMM appears to be one of the best mowers ever. I do not have more then 2 hours on the flail so I am still in the adjustment period.
Know-it-all neighbors tell me the flail will change my life-not yet convinced. The Kubota MMM has an unbelievable cut, flail seems ok but so what?
Any advice?

Thank you!

I wish to welcome you as a new member to the Flail Mower Nation.
We need or I need a bit more information about your operating conditions if you do not mind.

There is absolutely no reason you cannot use the flailmower at all times.

My first operating question is this:

Whose brand of flailmower did you purchase and does it have an adjustable reshredding door in the rear or simply discharge the clippings?

My second question is:

Does the design have two three or four rows of side slicer knives or scoop knives or does it have knive mounts that are slightly staggered for each scoop knive or actual hammer knive?

My third and fourth and fifth questions are these:

Where is the rear roller set for the height of cut?

Have you burned out belts?

Do you operate the flailmower at the recommended 540 R.P.M. engine speed and at a ground speed that shreds the material thouroughly?

Hi Leon,

I will need to look at the device to answer most of your questions. This is what I have right off the top of my head:

It is a 'Value Leader' Chinese made mower. It appears to be quite a solid machine.
I will look but I am pretty sure the clippings are simple discharge type.
knife mounts that are slightly staggered for each scoop knife
rear roller set for the height of cut at lowest possible setting
I have not burned any of the 3 belts. They are all in new condition and properly tensioned
Yes I mow at 540 R.P.M. engine speed and at a ground speed that shreds the material thoroughly

My initial set up was to level the tracks or skids by adjusting the top link. I try to adjust the cut by the top link and not the hydraulics. Yesterday the top link came unbolted for the last minute of so but prior to that time it appeased to cut very nicely. I am using 23 PTO horse power on a 64" mower deck and there appears to be no power problem at all.

Hello Buster,

The scoop knive will cut less finely
than a set of side slicers in the
beginning of a mowing cycle.

But saying that once you get the
cut to near the sod it will perform
well with the scoop knives.

About the height of cut, y
you should be using the rear roller
with the flail mower level from front to back.
The skids are only there to prevent the rotor
from scalping the ground as a failsafe.

I only want you to succeed with your flailmower Buster as it will give
you a superior cut even with the scoop knives during a season of mowing.

I have both, and think I'd use the flail in the orchard. If yours is offset that is. It's too easy to skin a valuable tree trunk with the front corner or side plate of a rotary cutter, and the offset of the flail will let you get closer to the trunk without your attention getting diverted by branches slapping you in the face.

I own an Asian Pear orchard so I am more concerned about impalement then the tree! :)

Gently blowing branches in the wind-my rear end! More like pool ques and they are all out to get me!

My next implement may be a grapple or a box of dynamite! :):)
