I am going to sell my cab 4720 tractor and order me either a 5075M or 5085M. I have about 60 acres of land that I want to do some small scale row crop farming. Beside a hp and price difference, is there anything else that stands out between these 2 tractors?

someone mentioned differences in the hydraulic valve option where the 5085M had more options, don't know myself.

The main difference is the engines. The 5075M has a 5 cylinder 3.0 liter turbo diesel. It does not have wet sleeves they are cast in the block. The 5085M has a 4 cylinder 4.5 liter turbo diesel. It has the wet sleeves, individual replaceable cylinder liners. This model is 10HP more. There are other versions of the 4.5 liter diesel pushing out a lot more HP. It's 50% larger displacement engine, 4.5L vs 3.0L.
The 5085M has approximately 4 gallon per minute higher hydraulic pump volume. Cab version will hold 6 gallons more fuel and weigh about 600lbs more than the 5075M.
You can get the same transmissions and hydraulic valves on both.

Zebrafive pretty well nailed it. My vote goes for the 5085M...

I would try and keep the 4720 if at all feasible, the CUT's are much nicer to operate than the larger tractors with their HST transmissions.

Have you called your dealer to see what the price difference is between them? I'd go for the bigger engine, but right now I'd be doing good to afford a 4 hp harbor freight engine. :)

My 5520 is a 276 cu in, 86 HP, 4.5 and it is a much more stout than the smaller tractor. It is a real mass of machine that is good on fuel and is as good at tillage as it is at tip-toeing through the corn rows. I plan to keep as long as I am around.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Just what I was looking for. I am going to go with the 5085M. As soon as I sell my 4720.

Yep, just the engine and hydraulic output.

Smitty,
Just a few suggestions.
Go with the 16x16 Power Reverser transmission option. You'll be glad you did.
Radial tires. Much better ride plus greater ground contact. Really helps put all that hp to the dirt.
540/540E PTO is a must. Most of the things you do with that tractor can be done in 540E mode. That's 1700 rpm -vs- 2100 rpm. Big fuel savings. (just looked at JD website and saw that the 540E is now standard equpiment)
Electrohydraulic 3 pt hitch. You'll wonder how you ever got by without one.
Go ahead and order the outside mirror kits. The one in the cab is useless.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the 16x16 power reverser transmission and definitely love the 540E pto. I want some wide radial tires, something similar to the ones I see on some of the European models (5100R series).
