Went to crank my 35 and instead of the normal starting sound then ignition it sounded like something winding up then down really loud. Is my starter shot?

Thanks.

maybe your bendix is bad. Try removing the starter for a bench test. When jumped the starter gear should shoot out as it turns

Likely bad bendix as mentioned.

Could be missing teeth on the flywheel but thats remote.

Try wacking it with a hammer while starting, see if it engages.

And/or remove and bench test.

Bendix. Pull the starter and bench test. Bendix should move quickly toward the starter when 6V or 12V is applied to the starter solenoid.

try taping it with a hammer [ not hard] while someone tries to start it. like what has already been mentioned.

Tapped with hammer, sounded like something was going to engage but didn't and I cranked and tapped for a while....guess I'lll take it off for further investigation.

Usually a good rap will free it up.

I bet the bendix isnt coming out all the way. You'll see it on your bench test.
