bolens ht20 rear axle removal

I purchased a new rear axle for my ht20 can anyone tell me the procedure for removal of old and replacing with new? looks to me like the rear trans needs to come out completely and side plate removed? Is axle held in with snap ring?

From my Illustrated parts book

Axles, p/n 1724077 L.H. and 1724076 R.H. are each held in by Retaining ring, external p/n 1185732.

Transaxle housing covers would need to be opened up to get to those rings.
