I've got a couple spots in the garden where I have to back into to till. Has anyone tried this or will I tear something up? The only thing I can think of is I'll need to raise the rear shield to avoid plowing it into the ground.

You'll need to lift the tiller, back up as close as practical to the fence (or whatever the obstacle is), then lower the tiller and till your way out. Repeat as necessary...

I've done this with the tail gate raised.

I've got very rocky ground and if I'm in a new area, I usually do a reverse till the first pass to expose a few more rocks. It helps keep them from rattling around in the box or worse, binding the tines. So far I haven't lost any tines.

I haven't tried it - but I do know that King Kutter warns in the manual for my 60" tiller not to run it backward or it might end up being damaged/destroyed.
