It's a 2005 Kohler Command CV730 26 HP with about 30 hours and I'm doing the first oil change.... The manual says to use #12-050-01-S. The filter that came on it is a yellow Cub Cadet #25-050-25 (which the 1000 Series manual says is only for the 1042) and the under-hood sticker says to use a #12-050-08 which I've never seen anywhere! Did it come with the wrong filter on it or what have other folks used? Does it really matter? The dealer I bought it from tried to sell me a Cub Cadet brand filter labelled only for the Kohler Courage... Thanks for any advice.

I run the WIX/napa gold/carquest premium version of a motorcraft FL400S on my kohler command 20 (horizontal). It's the same specs as the CC filter, but about twice as long. If you've got the room in the engine compartment & under the hood, run that one. There's tons of room for it on my 2544.

It just seems odd that there are three different filters in Cub Cadet's mind all for the same engine. The one that came on the tractor (25-050-25) seems the logical choice to replace but like you said the 12-050-01 and -08 are out there and they seem to be the ones recommended. As long as it filters the oil, I guess it doesn't really matter; I just don't want to screw anything up on such a simple procedure.

Kohler specs a filter; then Cub has a space issue and adapts to make it work; ie, a new number filter. (I think). I can see no reason one would be better than the other, unless space is a concern. Cub may have had an issue with it sticking out. If you do use a longer filter make sure to use dipstick to fill as the filter will hold a bit more oil.
