Whats a good wood preservative?

Thanks for your contributions gentlemen. I was hoping to learn about some great old natural and cheap recipe for this but since posting the original question I've done a bit more research and now (as some of you have also suggested) I'm leaning towards buying one of the brand name products. It sounds like these products provide better protection and durability than the older oils such as linseed and tung oil. Cabots have a new product called Aquadeck which is a water based 'oil' they claim provides equal protection to their traditional oil, so I might check that out at the hardware store. I much prefer to used water based stuff wherever possible. I've already used a new water based timber stain on some great slabs of exterior plywood panelling so I'm crossing my fingers that that holds up as well as the makers (Wattyl) claim it it will.

Incidently I havent checked out the price of boiled linseed oil lately but I think I recall that it was around about the same price as brand name decking oils anyway. Maybe even dearer.

I use CWF on our log home in VT which was built with local spruce. The 5/4 floor sticks out under the log walls and that along with all the checks in the logs provides us with a nerve racking high risk building. ( My wife owed it when I met her, it wasn't me) We CWF the whole thing every 5 years or so and have had no problems at all. It's a really good thing my wife met me when she did.

Yep, she's lucky she was able to put a roof over your head just in time.
