Your stalls look good SteelDust. I think the 3/4" conduit will hold up just fine. I have only ever had horses bite at the grill work when fussing over something. Their saliva will work on even the best galvanized or powder coated grill work over time anyway.

I have used some prefab grills from Ramm Fence that are shipped in pieces via UPS rather than welded which reduces the shipping considerably over motor freight. They use two pieces of U shaped channel that slip over your stall boards and header. You insert hard rubber grommets to snug up the vertical pipes that make up the grill work. Those pipes are only maybe 5/8" and fairly light but hold up just fine. Still gets expensive doing a whole bunch of stalls.

I guess that you are okay with opening the doors for hay and grain rather than cutting in some openings?

I'm getting a little closer to my barn project...

Any chance on getting info on the timber sizing and dimensions? I think the poles are all 4" x 6"

I got a line on some 8x8 posts free if I can get them out on a moments notice... they were ordered for a dock and the project isn't going to happen.... supposed to be specially treated.

Did you go 8' for the side walls and 20' to the peak? What about floor joists?

Is there anything you would do differently now? How is the 12' aisle working out?

One of the nicest barns I've seen anyone build!

I'm so glad that UltraRunner bumped this thread to the top, or I may have missed it! I can't say anything more in the way of 'accolades' that hasn't already be said! Absolutely beautiful! Design, craftsmanship, functionality, and beauty! You should be extremely proud for both your construction prowness, and photo documentation as well! ~Scotty

Hmmm, since I last posted here the outer stall doors are on, the gravel has all been brought up to level and compacted and I have some temporary paddocks on the outside. All I need before the rain and mud comes is some material for the stalls. Where I work I can get 1/2" conveyor belt pretty easily for next to nothing. It's probably more durable than stall mats and cheaper, but the downside is it moves around more and can get slippery. In the mean time it been seeing plenty of service for tractor and implement storage and a place to keep my other pickup out of my work shop.

As far as the posts, the shorter wall posts are 6x6". The longer center posts were 6x8". The reason for the heavier posts was two fold. First, they bear the weight of the loft. Second, they were 25 foot posts, the 6x8's tend to be a lot more true in those lengths than the 6x6".

If I could get 8x8" for free I personally would already have them sitting on the ground. If I recall correctly posts were about 15% of the total cost of the structure. 8x8" wasn't required here, as our snow loads are relatively light. But, they would work great.

My door openings are 8', so it's about 8'6" to where the sidewall meets the roof. I think that's the most common way of measuring the eave height. It's 5/12 pitch on the roof...mainly to give room to easily enter the loft. Off the top of my head, it's right around 19' to the peak. Loft rim joists are structural grade 2x12, the joists are structural 2x10 spaced 16" OC. Nearly all the framing, purlins, girts, etc was 2x6 Doug Fir.

There is a few small things I'd have done different in how I secured the eave overhang to the structure, but it made it though the worst snowfall we've had in 50 years last winter, so my concern was for nothing. The 12 foot aisle way is fine with me, had I more room I'd have gone wider, 16 is really nice.

SteelDust... great to hear from you and thanks much for the update!

I'm having a hard time pinning down the posts... they were offered but can't seem to get the commitment of when I can get them... I hope soon!

I'm thinking of using kind of a modified post and beam construction with the 8 x 8 posts by notching the posts to let in my 2 x material and then rest the loft floor on the let in rim joist and I wouldn't need to drive all the joist hanger nails... just a thought.

Not sure if I will have enough of the long ones so I might have to platform frame the loft... The HOA is giving mixed signals... the showed the past chairman of the building committee the location I have in mind and he said just build it since no one will see it...

They don't allow any accessory or detached buildings of any kind except there is an exception for Equestrian Barn in the 1947 CC&R's The limit is 2 horses... but you need a place for shavings, wash area, tack and hay... to your barn would probably be the absolute max... out of 200 home owners... only 2 have horses and only a dozen or so have barns... even though this area is designated for horses and has numerous overgrown trails leading to the East Bay Park Lands...

Your post is very inspirational and everyone who I've showed them to has been very impressed.

Thanks again...

Looks like it's a go on the free 8x8" posts... there are 7 of them 16' long... so they're much shorter than yours...

I'm thinking I could use them for the center isle and stick frame the loft?

He also has about 30 railroad ties to get rid of... think I should grab em... maybe for a retaining wall?

What a gorgeous barn! I am in Olympia and just getting ready to start a 36x72 pole barn on my property utilizing a similar rafter/truss design but with a single pitch roof rather than the monitor style. Steeldust, I wondered if you could post a followup on how your building has held up and if there is anything you would change in hindsight?

Thanks for the terrific thread and all the detail, it sure helps to have some pictures to help visualize what we will be doing!
