I know that some manufacturers specify using OSB or decking under their metal roofing, but it's pretty rare and only on certain types of panels. What type of roof panel are you using?

The one concern about using decking under metal is condensation. There needs to be a water proof layer between the metal and the wood. Most often, I've seen regular roofing felt paper used for this.

The roof looks like R panles, which are normally sealed at the ends to keep out bugs and moisture, but with decking underneith and the condensation issue, I wonder if you can seal the ends up? Getting the water out and not having it trapped would be impossible with the ends sealed up.
The eave ends are capped with a foam liner but the top end is vented into the ridge cap (top edge foam is between the steel and the ridge cap). The amount of condensation that accumulates between the steel and vapour barrier (felt) should be minimal (i.e. not enough to cause pooling above the eave) because there is very little air exchange between them. The foam ends don't seal very tightly anyway...

Well, I have one minor update. I hoped to have all the exterior stall doors framed and all the girts on by now but.... Never did I imagine I'd be spending Saturday troubleshooting why I didn't have any water, and Sunday replacing a 4 year old Aermotor well pump. The troubleshooting took that long as I refused to believe a quality well pump, that old could be in a locked rotor condition. I even went as far as to run into town Saturday and buy a new control box, the good news is I can return that.

Anyhow, I have some of the girts up and the loft door opening framed, for the most part a few "finishing touches" are still required before siding could go up. It's kind of starting to look like a barn. As with any building, I now stand inside and think to myself....should have went bigger.

How many times have I said that to myself? Three? No, four times. ;)
Your barn is looking great!
Just remember that thought when you build your next one.

Looks like you're about ready for siding. That should really be exciting!!!

As for size, you can always make it longer if you have the land for it.

Quick update as I hit a significant milestone...I'm finally ready for siding. It looks like I'm a week or two out on being able to get the siding. In the meantime, there is still a few odds and ends to take care of. I managed to get the hydrant installed, so that's one more thing off the list. I'm considering running the electrical while I wait on the siding.

Things finally came together on my siding today, and I was able to drive up and pick up 5300 linear feet of 1x6 T&G cedar siding. The bunk is divided into 14-20 foot pieces. These are seconds, but with a little creative cutting and planning, I should be able to use 90% of it. If I have it calculated right this will be enough to side the barn, but I'll be a little short of being able to line the stalls and cover the soffits. I'm also considering residing the front and house facing side of my other pole building as this barn is now going to make the metal siding on that building look terrible.

Anyhow, here is a couple of pictures.

SteelDust,

Looking forward to seeing the siding go on. Out of curiosity...what are your plans for the openings that you've created along the sides. I assume the three smaller openings will lead into your stalls? What type of doors are you planning for each opening (including your one main opening under your loft door)?

What a great looking barn! I wish my house looked that nice. And you've got the right brand of truck in it, too. Can't wait to see the finished product!
