woodsplitter rebuild

Tractor folks, I just have to share this. I rebuilt my splitter to be able to let it stand alone without the tractor pto running it. I put a 26hp kohler v twin hooked to a 27gpm pump. Man, what a difference. Dropped my cycle time by 2/3 rds. Of course, it doesn't have the power of a 50hp tractor, but it sure puts out the wood. My daughter kept the wood away as I split and it was all she could keep up with. She is 32, so I am not talking of a small child. Anyway, being able to winch the blocks over the T knife and work them up is a pleasure, especially on the back with no lifting. Feel like a kid with a new toy.

I had 5 trees taken down, the largest one being 40" in dia. I am keeping all the wood so I have been doing a lot of cutting and then splitting with my splitter. Its a mtd 31 ton with a 8hp briggs. I split mostly in horizontal but can put it in vertical for the big pieces, which is still a big pain. I pull the 16' trailer around with my Kubota and fill it with the split wood.
So what are you talking about here? Because if I can get the big chunks in the horizontal position without killing my back, that would be a big help!

Dvan, I have an 8000 lb hyd winch with a 10ft A frame over the splitter area. With a set of tongs I can pick any block that will fit between the knife and the tongs. with the tongs at the block on the A frame, there is at least 6 ft of clearance. I will try to get up some pics of it

If you follow the standard rule of having half the HP of the GPM rating on the pump you could actually double the pump size or halve the engine size. Perhaps lower the engine RPM and gear up the pump to keep fuel consumption down.

I often wondered if a faster cycle time would make for faster production. Looks like it can.
