Go as deep as you can, unless you want to feed the birds. Also, it keeps the water cooler and cleaner.

You might want to check with your Inland Fisheries and Game Dept;Koi are illegal in Maine and a major PITA if you get "caught" with them; sorry, the devil made me do it
