Has Anyone Installed Pipe Bollards?

I do this for a living and it is really simple, 1st , technically if your digging more than 18" your supposed to call the national hot line, #811 or 1.800.272.1000, They will mark all utilities for you.

Generaly we use 5 1/2 inch O.D. ( wont be exactly 5 1/2) SCH 80 pipe.
Core Hole, fill with cement.

You could weld 1 piece of chain link to one side and remainder to the other pipe, (so you can lock long piece to welded single piece) If it's as bad as you say, they will probably use bolt cutters and take your chain!, so a "gate" idea similar to previous suggestions may be best. I also would put some kind of reflector or some type of "warning" on the pipe if it's close to a public use type road, (liability)

A wildlife cam might work set up close to your entrance .

Chain=hot pawn-shop item round-here, not much$,but not trackable,unless you mark it somehow?
I saw some long crate/pallet material yesterday@lawn mower shop. would make nice gates w/just about no mods. The co$t? FREE, hinge-it/hang-it. Look around? you never know what you may find?

This has long been a "back burner" project of mine. We used to have an oil/gas pump on our property (since removed). We still have the nice gravel road into the middle of a 40 acre field. I have been wanting to block that road for a while. This way I could do it with the post-hole digger and some steel. Thanks from another reader for all the great thoughts. It always seems that the design of a project takes longer than the build for me...and you guys just gave the design...what a great websight we have here!

We have several removable bollards at my workplace. 6" concrete filled steel pipe in 8" sleeves. The sleeves are 4' into the ground in concrete. Make sure the hole is tapered with the bottom bigger than the top so frost won't lift them. Make covers for the holes when bollards are removed. If you think nobody will step in the holes you're probably wrong. Ours have 1" diameter x 12" rod horizontally thru the top so they can be lifted with a forklift. I would go with a 4" pipe gate even if it's just a single pipe. Easier to open/close & harder than chain to break as the latch can be concealed inside the pipe. MikeD74T

Vic, my luck would be that I get the bollards in and the chain attached only to show up one day and the chain be missing. If they are stealing metal, why would the chain not be fair game? ...just a thought.

I like the hidden camera. That and a motion detector light is about as good as it gets. I also like to keep valuables within sight of the road. If you hide your stuff back in the woods, then the thieves will be hidden as they take their time ripping off your stuff. There is only one way to protect against a thief, and that's to not own anything.
